Deutsch Institute recently announced a record-high number of international students, reaching nearly 380,000 students for the 2023-2024 winter semester, an increase of 3% from the same period last year.

This makes international students account for approximately 13% of all students in Germany, with students from India leading the way with around 49,000 people, followed by China (38,700), Turkey (18,100), Austria (15,400), and Iran (15,200).

According to Professor Monika Jungbauer-Gans, a researcher from the German University Centre for Research and Education, this growth in international students at German universities is not only driven by a lack of language barriers but also a lack of program variety.

"We are talking about high-quality programs and high-ranked universities, so we definitely need to cater to different language needs. I mean, English-speaking students coming to Germany and feeling completely comfortable with our system,” ông nói.

DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service), an organization supporting German education and research, aims to support universities offering more programs in English. Meanwhile, Kai Sicks, Secretary-General of DAAD, stressed the importance of giving students the chance to engage in German culture.

"Our studies show that it makes a huge difference when a student is actively engaged with German culture. That could be through participating in projects, joining a German class, or living with a German host family," Kai Sicks added.

Moreover, Germany – the largest economy in Europe – has been facing severe shortages in skilled labor due to population aging. Reuters reported that Germany will need an estimated 7 million skilled workers by 2035 due to an aging population. Therefore, the government has launched initiatives to encourage students to stay and work in Germany after graduating, especially with the development of AI, robotics, and related technologies.

With nearly 500 programs in English taught at German universities, study abroad in Germany offers both excellent education quality and opportunities to gain working experience upon graduation. Here are the top three reasons why study in Germany has become the destination of choice for many international students, as confirmed by a study conducted by Study in Germany.

The first reason

German public universities waive tuition fees for international students, with a small administrative fee of only €150-250 (~VND 3-5 million) per year. The excellent reputation and quality of education offered at German universities ensure students earn their degrees.

Second reason

Living costs in Germany, particularly for students, range around €930 per month (~VND 1,000,000/ USD 430), relatively affordable compared to countries such as the United States (~VND 4.2 million), United Kingdom (~VND 7.2 million), and Canada (~VND 2.1 million). Students can thus benefit from quality education and an acceptable lifestyle.

Third reason

Foreign graduates have a significant benefit when it comes to applying for a long-term resident visa, enabling them to work in Germany for a period of 18 months with an expanded residency. Furthermore, statistics indicate that about 70% of international students express their preference for staying and working in Germany after completing their degree.

As seen, these are just some of the key factors behind Germany’s rapid growth as a desirable study destination.
